Ep. 095 – Paul Hedgecock with UGoTour, Part 4

Paul Hedgecock of UGoTour.

Paul Hedgecock of UGoTour.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy work/life balance, UGoTour founder Paul Hedgecock has his work cut out for him. As the father of eight kids, maintaining that balance on a daily basis is a fact of life. Along the way, he’s learned a few things of value, even for entrepreneurs who couldn’t field a kids’ ice hockey team at a moment’s notice.

In this final interview segment, host Tom Ryan and producer Jason Pyles talk with Paul about the big lessons he’s learned about unplugging from the startup lifestyle.

• “You just know all the answers” and the value of listening

• “If I’m explaining my idea to someone, and they aren’t getting it, that really means that I need to refine my idea more.”

• Perspectives on work/life balance from an entrepreneur with eight kids

  • Be able to answer the question: “What’s the most important thing to me?”
  • Be balanced in your approach to work/life balance
  • Value those people outside your business who help keep you grounded
  • Stay focused on action

• Daily transitioning from the entrepreneur mindset to being mentally and emotionally present for your family

  • There is no such thing as being “done” as an entrepreneur or a parent
  • Turn off the phone when your work day is over
  • Set rules, but remember that sometimes you will need to break them
  • Set aside time to catch up with the family
  • Don’t turn the “family switch” off all the way

• Sign off, and ways to contact the show
